The Expert Approach by Daniel Fagan MBChB MRCS (Eng) FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Dan Fagan and the Spine Art team stand at the forefront of diagnosing and treating sacroiliac joint dysfunction. With a comprehensive clinical examination focused on identifying signs of sacroiliac joint irritability, our patients receive personalised care grounded in expertise and years of experience.

What is the process for treatment of sacro-iliac pain or dysfunction?

Treatment other than physiotherapy or chiropractic manipulation has been lacking traditionally, with many doctors unable to recognise or treat it. Mr Dan Fagan has been successfully treating this condition since 2008 and is the only surgeon in the region to offer percutaneous day case surgery regularly in the private sector for sacro-iliac joint pain. Most patients only need a single course of injections to improve matters however, and it is rare to need an operation – 90% of people don’t need one!

SacroIliac Injection

A sacroiliac joint injection is used to diagnose or treat lower back pain that comes from your sacroiliac joint. This is normally 90% effective at getting rid of your low back pain or buttock pain. It also initially helps to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the Sacroiliac Joint Fusion surgery take?

The procedure typically lasts between one and two hours, depending on the complexity of the case and the patient’s specific health conditions.

What is the recovery time after Sacroiliac Joint Fusion surgery?

Recovery times can vary, but most patients can expect to return to light, everyday activities by two weeks. Full recovery and the resumption of more strenuous activities might take 3 – 6 months, guided by the patient’s progress and physician’s advice.

Will I need physical therapy after surgery?

Yes, physical therapy can be a critical component of the recovery process. It helps balance the muscles around the sacroiliac joint, improve flexibility, and accelerate the return to normal activities. A customised physical therapy plan will be designed for your specific recovery needs.

Is Sacroiliac Joint Fusion surgery painful?

Patients will receive anaesthesia during the procedure to ensure comfort. Some discomfort and pain are expected post-surgery, which can be managed effectively with medications prescribed by your doctor.

How successful is Sacroiliac Joint Fusion in alleviating pain?

Most patients report a significant reduction in pain and improvement in their quality of life post-surgery. Success is not guaranteed, but the procedure has a high satisfaction rate among those who have not found relief through other conventional treatments.

Are there any risks associated with Sacroiliac Joint Fusion surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, risks include infection, sacral nerve damage, and blood clots. However, the minimally invasive nature of this surgery considerably reduces these risks. During your consultation, we will discuss all potential risks and how we mitigate them.

Can Sacroiliac Joint Fusion surgery be reversed?

Sacroiliac Joint Fusion is considered a permanent procedure. Before proceeding, it is crucial to exhaust all non-surgical treatment options and thoroughly discuss the potential outcomes and expectations with your surgeon.
